Music on the Course

What kind of music do you listen to when you’re playing disc golf? Or do you enjoy listening to the symphony of the great outdoors?

Personally, I enjoy the sounds of nature and good conversation with friends. Getting outside and practicing this ritual can be therapeutic, even. But who doesn’t like to crank some speakers on a perfectly hot summer day, the songs are just hitting and so are the birdies. From oldies to the latest hits, people like to jam out while playing some disc. I’ve had speakers blaring Phish on golf carts while teeing off at 7am at a country club, it’s only right that it translates to disc golf.

How many people do you think could remember the song they were listening to when they got their aces?

Those songs that bring you back to a memory, like your conscious time traveled the second it came on and it feels like you’re right there again. Is there a song that brings you back to an ace? It comes on and its got you thinkin’ you could do it again, a repeat of that glorious moment. I don’t remember the song I was listening to on my first, but I would bet money it was pop smoke because Juleon (our self-appointed dj) was playing a lot of him at the time. All I can think of is the stupid “DIOR DIOR” song playing in my head now…

Also, how much does other people’s music distract you?

Did you totally whiff your drive while the group of 4 listening to John Mayer walk up to your tee? Did gravity really get in your head? I think it’s respectful to turn your music down when coming near another group. Your music might throw off someone else’s toss, or there’s two speakers competing for everyone’s ear drums and nobody wants to hear that. Turn your speakers down when you’re around other people playing. It’s a push of a button, you’re already taking snapchats of your par saves.

One time my friends and I each brought our own AirPods to the course, linked up our Spotify accounts to play the same songs, and proceed to jam out all together on the same playlist with one AirPod in each. It was like our own silent disco in the woods. We were all dancing around lookin like straight fools to anybody playing holes near us. Jumping off rocks, dancing in unison, going apeshit on long birdie putts to bass drops in the songs. I greatly urge you try it with your friends this summer, it may have been my favorite time discing of all time. Just make sure everyone approves the playlist and your fun begins.

Maybe you’re crushing your putts playing Tupac, or maybe you’re sending discs straight into trees, blowing trees, while listening to Bob Marley’s greatest hits. There’s definitely a mood that music can put you in while you’re out bangin chains with your buddies. I’ve heard every single type of music out playing disc golf, and I’ve probably listened to every genre myself. The music sets a vibe to the whole game, just as much as silence.

silence…

The silence before the sound of a disc hitting chains might be the sweetest silence ever. You have that gut feeling its headed right to the basket, your body tenses up, and you hear the chains ring as you see the disc fly in, praying to god it doesn’t go thru or bounce out. Sure, there might be friends saying ‘oh there it is’ and ‘get there, get there,’ but you don’t hear that if it’s your disc headed straight to the basket. You only wanna hear chains, baby. The group in front of you, listening to Garth Brooks, cheering you on saying how awesome that was.

Don’t get me wrong, I listen to my fair share of country music. Knowing how many sad, heartbroken, I hate my ex but I love my ex country songs there are out there, I could never put on a full country music playlist. A playlist with a few country music jams sprinkled in is actually appreciated by most! But a whole ass playlist of just country…no thank you. I say that with all respect to my strictly country listeners out there, but having an obstacle or two out in them cornfields might step your game up.

And then there’s The Song.

Everyone has The Song. That first song you put on when you get to the gym, or the first song you turn on when you get in car. The only song that could bring your game back from the dead comes on, you step onto the tee pad, and WHAM!! Right into a tree 20 ft in front of you. No, it’s not the music, you just suck.

If you are going to play some tunes during your round, I would recommend the JBL Clip 4 because of its ability to clip right to your disc golf bag. This is what Juleon uses on the course and it has proved as a reliable source of sound for the crew. The bluetooth connectivity is easy and you have buttons that anyone can run up and skip the song they don’t like! It also comes in a bunch of funky color schemes, and is applicable for more activities than just disc golf, so I encourage anybody looking for a convenient speaker to check this one out.
